DISASTER AVERTED IN BAMBERG

Altres Rathaus
One of the most picture perfect buildings you will see anywhere is the Altres Rathaus, Bamberg’s Old Town Hall. And quite possibly its one of the most photographed.

A touch of Harry Potter perhaps?
The structure is a bit of a curiosity, an eclectic grouping of carvings, frescoes, statues, arches and a rickety timber building that extends out over the river.

The story goes that the bishop of Bamberg would not grant the townsfolk any land for construction of their town hall.  Undeterred, the citizens rammed stakes into the Regnitz river to create an artificial island and construction of their town hall was eventually completed in 1462.

Eclectic rooftops
Bamberg’s Altstadt, or old town, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a superb example of a medieval town with particularly eye catching architecture. Timbered houses, seriously leaning doorways and a checkerboard of uneven rooftops, it was hard not to be charmed.

Cathedral Rose Garden.
Even though we were well into October, the summer flowers still looked fresh in boxes and containers secured to window ledges just about everywhere in town.

Despite the near freezing temperatures, the rose garden near the Cathedral was still putting on a colourful show.

Colour everywhere
Bamberg's famous dark beer
After walking the seriously cobbled streets for a few hours it was time to sample the smoky flavoured dark beer that Bamberg is famous for.

And of course the pretzels and sausages.

Beautiful!
And as for the disaster that could have been?

It was hovering around zero when we had left the riverboat that morning with thick frost coating the floor of the sun deck.  Smug that I had remembered to pack gloves when most of our travelling companions had not, I realized my gloves were missing at the end of the day.  Thanks to a quick thinking Doug who sprinted back to the bus we had travelled from town on, he retrieved my trusty Argentine carpinchos from the bus floor.

That was a close one!
